A new unmanned ship with a 99% sea mine detection rate has been delivered to the French Navy. Developed by Thales, the surface naval drone reduces personnel exposure to hazardous environments.

Designed to improve the operational performance of navies, the sea drone guarantees naval forces operational superiority in the face of increasingly complex threats.

New operational concept for mine countermeasures

The vessel is equipped with a TSAM towed sonar and on board the SAMDIS multi-view sonar.

“Thales is supporting the French Navy to meet the challenges of the transition towards a new operational concept for mine countermeasures,” said Sébastien Guérémy, Vice-President in charge of the Underwater Systems activities at Thales.

“The autonomous system developed by Thales significantly improves mission efficiency while limiting the exposure of crews to mine-related risks.”

The naval drone is integrated with high-performance sensors, notably the world’s unique “multi-view” SAMDIS antenna, which optimizes operational performance.

The company also claims that the system is integrated with unique mission planning and sonar data analysis software designed to optimize the work and workload of operators.

The autonomous surface drone system delivered represents a first-of-its-kind capability for maritime defense operations, integrating a range of advanced technical and software innovations, according to Thales.

3,000 hours of sea trials

More than 3,000 hours of sea trials were conducted to adapt the systems to fully meet operational needs.

This delivery of new drones follows the first production system delivered in December 2024, consisting of the surface drone (USV) equipped with the towed sonar TSAM, data analysis software using Artificial Intelligence (AI), MiMap and the M-Cube mission management system, according to a press release.

Drone increases operational superiority of naval forces

In close collaboration with Couach shipyard, Thales is upgrading the initial prototypes of surface drones, which have been tested by the French Navy and Royal Navy since 2021, thus demonstrating its expertise as a systems integrator.

The delivery of the new sea drone is part of the Franco-British Maritime Mine Counter Measures the MMCM programme.

“The MMCM program increases the operational superiority of naval forces, with its M-Cube software at core, designed for fast integration of heterogeneous drones, its high-performance sensors and innovative AI algorithms, reducing operators’ cognitive load. This programme, a world first, is the result of unwavering commitment and a source of pride for our teams,” added Guérémy.

This new step marks the company’s commitment and industrial dynamic in this strategic programme, managed by OCCAR with the support of the French (Direction générale de l’armement (DGA) and the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), according to the Thales.

📌 MAROKO133 Breaking ai: Malware Is Now Using AI to Rewrite Its Own Code to Avoid

Researchers at Google’s Threat Intelligence Group (GTIG) have discovered that hackers are creating malware that can harness the power of large language models (LLMs) to rewrite itself on the fly.

An experimental malware family dubbed PROMPTFLUX, identified by GTIG in a recent blog post, can rewrite its own code to avoid detection.

It’s an escalation that could make future malware far more difficult to detect, further highlighting growing cybersecurity concerns brought on by the advent and widespread adoption of generative AI.

Tools like PROMPTFLUX “dynamically generate malicious scripts, obfuscate their own code to evade detection, and leverage AI models to create malicious functions on demand, rather than hard-coding them into the malware,” GTIG wrote.

According to the tech giant, this new “just-in-time” approach “represents a significant step toward more autonomous and adaptive malware.”

PROMPTFLUX is a Trojan horse malware that interacts with Google’s Gemini AI model’s application programming interface (API) to learn how to modify itself to avoid detection on the fly.

“Further examination of PROMPTFLUX samples suggests this code family is currently in a development or testing phase since some incomplete features are commented out and a mechanism exists to limit the malware’s Gemini API calls,” the group wrote.

Fortunately, the exploit has yet to be observed infecting machines in the wild, as the “current state of this malware does not demonstrate an ability to compromise a victim network or device,” Google noted. “We have taken action to disable the assets associated with this activity.”

Nonetheless, GTIG noted that malware like PROMPTFLUX appears to be “associated with financially motivated actors.” The team warned of a maturing “underground marketplace for illicit AI tools,” which could lower the “barrier to entry for less sophisticated actors.”

The threat of adversaries leveraging AI tools is very real. According to Google, “State-sponsored actors from North Korea, Iran, and the People’s Republic of China” are already tinkering with the AI to enhance their operations.

In response to the threat, GTIG introduced a new conceptual framework aimed at securing AI systems.

While generative AI can be used to create almost impossible-to-detect malware, it can be used for good as well. For instance, Google recently introduced an AI agent, dubbed Big Sleep, which is designed to use AI to identify security vulnerabilities in software.

In other words, it’s AI being pitted against AI in a cybersecurity war that’s evolving rapidly.
