A team at EPFL’s Computational Robot Design and Fabrication Lab (CREATE Lab) has taken a different route by building a robotic manipulator from discarded langoustine abdomen exoskeletons.
The goal is to challenge conventional engineering and explore more sustainable, circular design models.
Turning nature into hardware
Instead of using metals or plastics, the team worked with food waste. CREATE Lab head Josie Hughes says merging natural structures with engineered systems opens new possibilities for robotics and sustainability.
“Exoskeletons combine mineralized shells with joint membranes, providing a balance of rigidity and flexibility that allows their segments to move independently,” she explains.
These features enable crustaceans rapid movements in water. Hughes adds that they also provide useful mechanical properties for robotics.
She continues, “And by repurposing food waste, we propose a sustainable cyclic design process in which materials can be recycled and adapted for new tasks.”
The work, published in Advanced Science, showcases three demonstrations: a manipulator capable of lifting up to 500 grams, a pair of soft robotic grippers, and a swimming robot powered by exoskeletal fins.
To build the system, the researchers embedded elastomer inside each exoskeleton section to control flexion and extension.
They then mounted the structure on a motorized base and applied a silicone coating to strengthen it and extend its working lifespan.
In testing, the manipulator moved objects into defined zones and handled items of various shapes and sizes. As grippers, two exoskeleton sections grasped delicate items like tomatoes as well as rigid objects like pens. The swimming version propelled itself through water at speeds of up to 11 centimeters per second.
Most internal components can be recovered after use. The exoskeleton detaches from the base, supporting the circular design goal.
First author Sareum Kim says the concept marks a first step toward truly sustainable robotics.
“To our knowledge, we are the first to propose a proof of concept to integrate food waste into a robotic system that combines sustainable design with reuse and recycling,” Kim says.
Natural design challenges
Working with biological materials brings variability. No two langoustine shells share identical geometry, meaning behavior can differ slightly between units.
The team says future work will require tunable control systems and more adaptive augmentation methods.
Even with limitations, they see potential applications ranging from monitoring platforms to medical implants made with bio-derived structures.
Hughes says the project highlights nature’s value in engineering.
“Although nature does not necessarily provide the optimal form, it still outperforms many artificial systems and offers valuable insights for designing functional machines based on elegant principles,” she says.
