Trump Media has struggled to find profitability since launching Truth Social in 2021.

The company went public through a blank-check merger in March 2024.

It has since explored cryptocurrency ventures, prediction markets, and a Roku streaming app.

The company reported a $54.8 million quarterly loss at the end of September. Its stock had fallen about 70% this year before rebounding sharply on Thursday.

Shares jumped more than 34% following the fusion announcement.

TAE brings scientific credibility and deep-pocketed backers.

Google, Chevron, and Goldman Sachs have invested in the company. TAE says it has built and operated five fusion reactors and raised more than $1.3 billion in private funding.

The merger would make one of the first publicly traded nuclear fusion companies.

Trump Media shareholders and TAE shareholders will each own roughly half of the combined entity. Trump owns about 41% of Trump Media stock.

Ethics and regulation

The deal sparked concerns about conflicts of interest. Fusion requires government oversight, public funding, and regulatory approvals.

Critics say Trump’s financial involvement complicates that process.

“He’s jumping into this industry just like he jumped into cryptocurrency a couple of years ago,” said Richard Painter, as quoted by the Associated Press.

“Just as the United States government is gonna get all involved in it. And it’s so obvious that there’s a huge conflict of interest.”

The announcement arrived the same day regulators issued an order allowing tech companies to connect data centers directly to power plants.

The move supports a broader push to expand AI infrastructure and domestic manufacturing.

Devin Nunes, CEO of Trump Media, will serve as co-CEO of the new company alongside TAE chief executive Michl Binderbauer.

“We’re taking a big step forward toward a revolutionary technology that will cement America’s global energy dominance for generations,” Nunes said.

Fusion and AI demand

Industry leaders say AI has revived interest in fusion. Data centers require enormous and constant power. Traditional grids already face strain.

“They need that constant capital because profitability is going to come further down into the future,” said Daniel Newman of Futurum Group.

Fusion advocates argue the technology offers long-term advantages.

It produces no carbon emissions and avoids long-lived radioactive waste. Supporters say fusion can scale once commercialized.

“Fusion is the technology that can meet the vast energy demands of AI,” said Andrew Holland of the Fusion Industry Association (Associated Press).

Private fusion companies have raised about $10 billion globally.

Most of that investment flows into U.S. startups. Industry surveys suggest fusion could reach the grid in the early 2030s.

Not everyone agrees. Elon Musk dismissed fusion efforts days before the deal.

“The Sun is an enormous, free fusion reactor in the sky,” Musk wrote. “It is super dumb to make tiny fusion reactors on Earth.”

For Trump Media, the merger represents its boldest pivot yet. Whether fusion can rescue a money-losing media firm remains uncertain.

While some anti-AI advocates have called for some extreme property damage to halt the AI boom, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders has a proposition that’s a little more down to Earth: simply shut it all down until we can figure out what the hell is going on.

In a video shared on social media, Sanders announced he’ll be pushing for a “moratorium on the construction of data centers that are powering the unregulated sprint to develop and deploy AI.”

His main contention is that society needs to slow down on the rapid deployment of new tech, and ask an important question: who benefits?

“Let us be clear: AI and robotics are the most transformative technologies in the history of humanity,” Sanders declares. “Just a few points we need to think about: one, who is aggressively pushing these technologies? Well, surprise, surprise, it happens to be the very wealthiest people on Earth.”

Sanders’ call comes at a time when AI-related capital expenditures account for around half of the US GDP growth throughout the year, as low-income Americans’ purchasing power plummets and vehicle repossessions hit levels equivalent to the Great Recession.

“Do you believe that these guys, these multibillionaires, are staying up nights worrying about what AI and robotics will do for the working families of our country, and the world?” Sanders continues. “I don’t think so. I think that these very, very, rich men want even more wealth, and even more power. “

“Question: if AI and robotics eliminate millions of jobs and create massive unemployment, how will people survive if they have no income?” the Vermont Senator challenges. “Very few members of Congress are seriously thinking about this.”

Sanders goes on to cite the growing degree of emotional dependence users are developing on AI chatbots, as well as the selfish ambitions of billionaires like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Dario Amodei.

“One thing’s for sure: this process is moving very, very, quickly, and we need to slow it down,” Sanders said. “This moratorium will give democracy a chance to catch up with these transformative changes that we are witnessing, and make sure that the benefits of these technologies work for all of us, not just the wealthiest people one Earth.”
