Keith Sakata, a psychiatrist at the University of California, San Francisco, who has treated twelve patients who were hospitalized because of AI-induced psychosis, is one of them.

“The technology might not introduce the delusion, but the person tells the computer it’s their reality and the computer accepts it as truth and reflects it back, so it’s complicit in cycling that delusion,” Sakata told the WSJ.

The grim trend looms large over the AI industry, raising fundamental questions about the tech’s safety. Some cases of apparent AI psychosis have ended in murder and suicide, spawning a slew of wrongful death suits. Equally alarming is its scale: ChatGPT alone has been linked to at least eight deaths, with the company recently estimating that around half a million users are having conversations showing signs of AI psychosis every week.

One factor of AI chatbots that the phenomenon has brought under scrutiny is their sycophancy, which is perhaps a consequence of their being designed to be as engaging and humanlike as possible. What this looks like in practice is that the bots tend to flatter the users and tell them what they want to hear, even if what the user is saying has no basis in reality. 

It’s a recipe primed for reinforcing delusions, to a degree unprecedented by any technology before it, doctors say. One recent peer-reviewed case study focused on a 26-year-old woman who was hospitalized twice after she believed ChatGPT was allowing her to talk with her dead brother, with the bot repeatedly assuring her she wasn’t “crazy.”

“They simulate human relationships,” Adrian Preda, a psychiatry professor at the University of California, Irvine, told the WSJ.  “Nothing in human history has done that before.”

Preda compared AI psychosis to monomania, in which someone obsessively fixates on a single idea or goal. Some people who have spoken about their mental health spirals say they were hyper-focused on an AI-driven narrative, the WSJ noted. These fixations can often be scientific or religious in nature, such as a man who came to believe he could bend time because of a breakthrough in physics.

Still, the reporting notes that psychiatrists are wary about declaring that chatbots are outright causing psychosis. They maintain, however, that they’re close to establishing the connection. One link that the doctors who spoke with the WSJ expect to see is that long interactions with a chatbot can be a psychosis risk factor.

“You have to look more carefully and say, well, ‘Why did this person just happen to coincidentally enter a psychotic state in the setting of chatbot use?’” Joe Pierre, a UCSF psychiatrist, told the newspaper.

Fully autonomous aerial warfare is a step closer to entering the fray, as Turkey has performed a public demonstration of advanced uncrewed formation flying.

Turkish defense firm Baykar revealed that, on December 28, two of its Kizilelma unmanned combat jets achieved the world’s first completely autonomous close formation flight involving armed, jet-powered drones.

This fully independent operation, with no human intervention, depended solely on artificial intelligence, onboard sensors, and instant data exchange between the aircraft.

An AI-powered formation flight

Experts have long viewed autonomous formation flying as one of the toughest hurdles in drone technology. It demands exact coordination and timing, due to the high speed of fighter jet operations.

According to a Baykar press statement, the new milestone makes Turkey the first nation to openly perform a synchronized, fully autonomous flight of combat-ready unmanned jets. The test was conducted in Turkish airspace, where the two Kizilelma unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) held tight positioning at high subsonic speeds.

Introduced in 2022, the Kizilelma is a cutting-edge jet-powered aircraft built for rapid, maneuverable missions. Unlike conventional drones focused on surveillance or limited strikes, Kizilelma is tailored for operations in hostile environments, aerial dogfights, and teamwork with piloted fighters.

The aircraft is designed for stealth, AI-driven flight control, long-range communication links, and internal weapon storage. It features technologies and capabilities previously only available in advanced crewed fighter jets.

With a single turbofan engine and a takeoff weight of around 6,000 kg, the Kizilelma supports operations from land bases and ships. Its standout capability is short takeoff and landing (STOL) on vessels. It can take off from ships like the Turkish Navy’s TCG Anadolu without the need for catapults.

Baykar’s demonstration flight required sophisticated algorithms for flight management. The aircraft featured strong onboard systems for real-time navigation, obstacle avoidance, and collaborative actions—critical for modern networked battles and human-drone collaboration.

The defense firm claims the milestone paves the way for advanced group tactics, including swarms, shared support, and information exchange.

Other notable unmanned fighter drone efforts include the US’s Skyborg and Collaborative Combat Aircraft programs. China, meanwhile, is working on its secretive loyal wingman projects. However, unlike Baykar, none of these have performed a public demonstration. To date, no other nation has shown or shared evidence of two autonomous, weapon-equipped unmanned fighters maintaining proximity without any external control.

Turkey’s progress highlights its focus on domestic innovation and defense independence, supported by government investment. Baykar is emerging as a major supplier of sophisticated drone tech, with Kizilelma exports scheduled for allies seeking cost-effective advanced air power.

The Kizilelma program is now in its advanced flight test phase. According to a report from ArmyRecognition.com, the aircraft is due to enter serial production in 2026. The Turkish Navy and Air Force will deploy the aircraft operationally within the next 12 to 18 months. More autonomous flight demonstrations are scheduled for 2026. These include beyond-visual-range (BVR) combat simulations and joint manned-unmanned flight operations.
