A new study confirms the iconic moai statues of Rapa Nui “walked” to their final locations in Easter Island, Chile. 

The team from Binghamton University and the University of Arizona used a combination of physics, 3D modeling, and on-the-ground experiments to test this theory. 

It challenges earlier ideas that the statues were moved lying down.

The ancient people of Rapa Nui likely used ropes to rock the giant statues in an upright, zig-zag motion along specially designed, concave roads. 

This method is said to be both energy-efficient and relatively fast once the motion is started.

“It shows that the Rapa Nui people were incredibly smart. They figured this out,” said Carl Lipo, Professor of Anthropology at Binghamton, and study co-author.

Moai statue design

The moai statues are massive megaliths, with roughly 1,000 of them built by the Rapa Nui people between roughly 1400 and 1650 CE. 

Nearly all of these enormous statues (about 95%) were carved from volcanic tuff sourced from the Rano Raraku quarry. PopSci reported that these statues measure “130,000 pounds” and are 32 feet high.

It was a long puzzle of how these ancient people moved the massive moai statues over 11 miles of hilly terrain without advanced gear. However, the new study has finally solved this problem.

The research team examined the moai’s unique design to confirm their theory.

First, they created high-resolution 3D models that revealed distinctive features like wide, D-shaped bases and a forward lean. It was hypothesized that these structures were intentionally designed to facilitate a rocking, zig-zagging “walking” motion.

Then, to test this, the team built a 4.35-ton replica moai with this forward-leaning design. 

Interestingly, the transport method was successfully demonstrated by moving the statue 100 meters in just 40 minutes with only 18 people. It showcased much improvement in efficiency over prior vertical moving attempts.

“The physics makes sense,” said Lipo.

“What we saw experimentally actually works. And as it gets bigger, it still works. All the attributes that we see about moving gigantic ones only get more and more consistent the bigger and bigger they get, because it becomes the only way you could move it,” Lipo explained. 

Ancient road features

The unique design of Rapa Nui’s ancient roads strongly supports the walking theory.

These roads are 4.5 meters wide and display a concave cross-section, which would have made them perfectly suited for stabilizing the upright, rocking moai during transport.

Evidence of parallel and overlapping roads indicates the Rapa Nui people consistently cleared a path and worked on the road in sequences as they moved the statues forward.

“What they are probably doing is clearing a path, moving it, clearing another, clearing it further, and moving it right in certain sequences. So they’re spending a lot of time on the road part,” Lipo noted. 

The results show the incredibly smart people of Rapa Nui pulled off a monumental engineering feat, making the most of their limited resources.

“They figured this out,” said Lipo. “They’re doing it the way that’s consistent with the resources they have. So it really gives honor to those people, saying, look at what they were able to achieve, and we have a lot to learn from them in these principles.”

The team concluded that the “walking” theory is the only explanation that fully accounts for all the evidence regarding how the moai were moved.

The study was published in the Journal of Archaeological Science.
